The Slice: Fried chicken buckets and unstoppable pop-ups
SHOOTING BUCKETS
Very soon, we'll all be drinking pellet ice limeades and eating buckets of fried chicken! Our friends at Mean Bird are busy birds indeed, preparing to open their brick & mortar take out shop (a couple doors down from our office!) at 2227 W. Main Street in just a few weeks. They chatted with Richmond Magazine about what they've got planned and how things are shaping up.
GO VEGAN OR GO HOME
Tomorrow at the Cask Cafe, Go Go Vegan Go, a new (you guessed it) vegan food truck will be popping up with a preview of their summer menu, which includes veganized comfort food faves like mac & cheez and cheezburgers, plus something called "Not So Pad Thai Fries," which co-owner April Viar enthusiastically describes as, "delicious and covered in crispy bean sprouts, thin sliced white onions and thin sliced pickled red onions, layered with special sauce and topped with crushed peanuts, scallions, cilantro & crispy fried onions." If you love beer, food, AND the little critters of nature, this pop-up is just for you. And look for Go Go Vegan Go at this year's Vegetarian Festival on Saturday, June 24th.
HEY PAUL, HEY PAUL, HEY PAUL, LET'S HAVE A BALL
If you missed the first modern Greek pop-up from Chef Paul Kostandin, grab your tickets now for Bubo's Summer Pop-Up at Whisk on Monday, June 12th. Four courses will be served family style for $40 per person, and there will be drink pairings available for purchase on-site. Check out this menu:
- Hummus, pickled vegetables, pita & chilled Hanover tomato, fresh cheese, housemade vinegar, crunchy salt
- Zucchini fritters, yogurt, mint & egg noodles, brown butter, feta, dried olives
- Skirt Steak, watermelon, pickled rind, greens, corn porridge & phyllo pie of oyster mushrooms and sweet corn
- Sesame cake, pineapple beer, ice cream by Whisk
GETTING JACKED
On the heels of a very successful outdoor Kamayan feast, The Jackdaw has announced three upcoming events for the summer:
- June 12 -- Pulutan Dinner (Filipino small plates, served family style, $50/person)
- August 7th -- Industry Night at Millie's
- August 21st -- The Last Kamayan, aka "Boodle Fight" at The Veil Brewing Co. (Alert: These sell out FAST.)
THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART
If you've always wanted to go to a Longoven pop-up but have missed your shot at tickets and ended up on the wait list, the wait is finally (almost) over. The Waitlist Series of dinners, which begins this Sunday, May 21st, offers tickets to folks who have been languishing on the waitlist, rather than releasing tickets to the (ravenously Longoven-starved) public, as they have in the past. That's good for waitlisters and bad for me, but ok, I guess fair's fair!
PIZZA IS A FLAT CIRCLE
The Brooklyn-based pizza-making duo, Pizzeria LaFerrara--Jason and Molly LaFerrara, will pop up at Dinamo on June 4th. According to Dinamo owner Mya Anitai, the $35 ticket will include two apps, four pizza tastes, and dessert. Drinks, including a barrel-aged negroni, sold separately. Stay glued to Dinamo's Instagram for tickets, which go on sale next week.
YOU CAN'T START A FIRE WITHOUT A SPARC
This upcoming Monday, Heritage will host a dinner benefitting SPARC, an organization that "inspires the creativity, confidence and character of every young person in our community through exceptional performing arts education." Heritage will welcome Lee Gregory of The Roosevelt and Southbound, Bryan McClure of Lemaire, Randall Doetzer of Nota Bene, and special guest Rob Newton for the dinner, which will include paired beer selections by The Veil Brewing Co. Seatings are at 6:00 and 8:00 pm, and tickets are $75/person.
SIP OF THE WEEK: POTTERS CRAFT CIDER GRAPEFRUIT HIBISCUIS
This tart and tangy Potters Craft cider is basically the rosé of ciders, meant for summertime barbecues and day drinking on the river. Look for the 500mL bottles at Little House Green Grocery, Ellwood Thompson's, and Stock Provisions.
BITE OF THE WEEK: HOT STUFF
Ames' Hot Southern Honey and Chicken Fiesta's green sauce are two of our go-to heat-increasers. Richmond Magazine rounded up five spicy selections made right here in RVA.
GRAM OF THE WEEK: @WHITLEYSPEANUTS
We're helping our friends at Whitley's Peanuts launch their Instagram. For nutty facts, pairing suggestions, and goober news, give them a follow.
